In All Star Events, Baseball

When it comes to entertainment value, the Midsummer Classic is by far the best among the four major sports, which was evident Tuesday night in San Diego, where the best in the league came together at Petco Park for the 2016 MLB All-Star Game.

For many players, selection to the All-Star game is a career highlight. Every year, the game brings the best players from each league to form two superteams, pitting the American League against the National League. But, how are they chosen?

The starting players are selected for the All-Star teams by a vote of other players, baseball writers and by the fans, while the remainder of the team is selected by the two team managers. So, what does it take to reach all-star status? Besides talent, persistence, and hard work of course, with these five assets, you are well on your way.

Leadership

Not only a leader, but an all-star is also a role model for the team, and many players around the world. They are great listeners and communicators, and know how to encourage their teammates on and off the field. All-stars lead by example helping others reach their greatest potential.

Motivation

To be an all-star you must possess the desire to want to win, not only for yourself, but for your team as well. Motivation is contagious and the greatest players know how to use it as a catalyst to victory.

Self-Knowledge

To be successful in anything, you need to know yourself; your strengths, and weaknesses both mental and physical. This allows you to help your team in all areas of the game. Self-knowledge leads to self-confidence.

Discipline

A key component to becoming an all-star is to practice discipline. Whether it’s waking up at 5AM every morning, working out consistently, practicing every day, or whatever the case may be, there are rules we must follow in life, and the same applies to baseball. Discipline gives order to everything we do.

Attitude

A positive attitude goes a long way. You can have all the skill in the world, be the most disciplined individual with lots of motivation and self-knowledge, but if you don’t have the right mind frame, your efforts will not produce successful results. A good attitude will overcome fear and self-doubt.
