Woodstock New York Little League | The Players, if you are new to baseball the Hometown All Stars baseball team would like to help educate you on the game they love. The game of baseball is played between two teams, each comprising nine players, that take turns playing offense (batting and baserunning) and defense (pitching and fielding).
The object of the offense is to attempt to score runs by hitting a ball that is thrown by the pitcher with a bat swung by the batter, then running counter-clockwise around a series of four bases: first, second, third, and home plate. A run is scored when a player advances around the bases and returns to home plate.
Woodstock New York Little League | The Players
The nine position player team consists of a pitcher, catcher, first baseperson, second baseperson, third baseperson, shortshop, left fielder, center fielder, and right fielder.
Pitcher – In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws the baseball from the pitcher’s mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk.
Catcher – When a batter takes his turn to hit, the catcher crouches behind home plate, in front of the (home) umpire, and receives the ball from the pitcher. This is a catcher’s primary duty, but he is also called upon to master many other skills in order to field his position well.
First Baseperson – A first baseperson is the player on the team playing defense who fields the area nearest first base, and is responsible for the majority of plays made at that base.
Second Baseperson – In baseball second baseperson is a fielding position in the infield, between second and first base. The second baseperson often possesses quick hands and feet, needs the ability to get rid of the ball quickly, and must be able to make the pivot on a double play.
Third Baseperson – Is the player in baseball whose responsibility is to defend the area nearest to third base — the third of four bases a baserunner must touch in succession to score a run.
Outfielders (left fielder, center fielder, and right fielder) – An outfielder is a person playing in one of the three defensive positions in baseball, farthest from the batter. These defenders are the left fielder, the center fielder, and the right fielder. An outfielder’s duty is to try to catch long fly balls before they hit the ground or to quickly catch or retrieve and return to the infield any other balls entering the outfield.
